Girlboss Spotlight - Jessica Mock of Southern Sugaring

Happy Sunday everyone! I am SO excited about this Q&A feature post with Jessica Mock of Southern Sugaring. I am beyond lucky that I get to call Jessica my friend. Not only is she beautiful, smart and owner of the sweetest hair removal salon in Savannah - she is also an amazing friend, mother and business owner resource! 1. What inspired you to open your own sugaring business?

When I was a full time makeup artist, I was sugaring one day a week. My day was so full of clients loving the results that I was having to turn away clients, and when my husband and I decided to start trying to have a baby, the world of makeup artistry wasn't really conducive to the life I envisioned with a family. (Which is funny now because there is no possible way any plan I had would create the seamless transition to working motherhood I'd pictured!) I decided this was an opportunity to design a life I was directing, and between that inspiration and the chance to surround myself in pink everything, I set out to build my this crazy business.
 

2. Going from a small room in RMC Boutique to your beautiful space on Chippewa Square must have been stressful- mentally & financially! How did you cope with that? 

Oh my gosh, there isn't a day that I don't have a miniature panic from the mental and financial stresses of this thing called business ownership. I never do one thing at a time, so when we found the location on Chippewa, I was a brand new mama of a 3-week old. You know, what's the challenge just in life with a newborn? Let's expand a business at the same time! But really, I do my best work when I'm overloaded, as I actually think a lot of women do. We are just built to multitask and respond better under pressure. I will say that I have an incredible support system in my husband, and I've joked about putting him on the payroll because he's seriously there all. the. time. 
 

3. What is your favorite part about owning your own salon/boutique?

Getting first pick of the new inventory!!! Just kidding...but maybe not. I really love getting to come to a place I designed from the ground up. It doesn't feel like I'm coming to work. It feels like my second home
 

4. How has having a baby changed how you operate your day-to-day business?
 

I love this one - it makes me laugh because literally as I type this I am lying on the couch trying to make sure this wild child of mine doesn't bump her head on what used to look like a very stylish mirrored coffee table that's now covered in baby kisses and cheerios.  She keeps coming over to help by pressing AAAAAAA over and over, so I'm backspacing pretty regularly.  I can't think of a single way having a baby hasn't changed the way I operate as a business woman (namely, everything I do requires a LOT more time), and I can honestly say I wasn't prepared for it to change quite so much.  But looking at her while she grins at me and dances around with a paper towel in her mouth, I seriously wouldn't change a thing!

 

5. What are some tips you have for staying focused on your goals when you are having stressful days or times of doubt?
 

There are two ways my perpetually optimistic mind processes that - the first is that the tough stuff always passes.  It's kind of amazing, but everything hard passes.  Reminding myself that I always get through it is encouraging.  The second is that if something feels like you're hitting a brick wall every time you try to do something, there's probably a reason for that.  You can always revisit the idea later, but sometimes taking a step back and looking at the big pictures allows you to see a different opportunity.

6. Let's talk about the fashion show - how did you come up with this idea? 
 

Oh my gosh, it's brilliant, right?  But I can't take credit for it - our new publicist, Melanie with Word of Mouth Savannah, and I met for lunch at Soho a couple months ago to brainstorm on our second anniversary celebration, and she knocked me over with this one.  The Victoria's Secret fashion show has always been a not-so-secret obsession of mine, and between our lingerie, swimwear, and sugaring services, I was completely in love with her idea!

 

7. What do you hope to accomplish with the fashion show? 
 

We want to showcase the melting pot that is Savannah, made up of every shape, size, color, and gender. Southern Sugaring is all about feeling sexy naked or nearly naked - and oh my gosh we NEED a show like this to knock the pants off our sweet old fashioned city! ;)

 

8. Do you have any secrets you can share about the show? 

We're going for a Babylonian garden feel, and that means the decor and costumes are going to be out of this world!!! We are super excited to have some guests from Bravo's Southern Charm in attendance. And y'all, the finale...it's going to absolutely blow your mind.
 

9. A portion of the proceeds from the show are going to the Safe Shelter - what made you want to do that? 
 

I'm part of a really inspiring group of women called the Savannah Influencers, and we have chosen SAFE Shelter as our philanthropy for the year. We've got a pretty lofty goal, and I really really hope that this event can make a big dent in it!

Time Management Tips from the Dr.....

I am so excited to feature this guest post by Dr. Stacie Allmond on the website tonight! Stacie and I went to high school together and she graduated 1 year ahead of me in school. She got her Bachelor's degree from Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah and then got her Medical School Doctorate at VCOM in Spartanburg, SC. She is currently in General Surgery Residency at Virginia Tech SOM/Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, VA. 

I posted something on Instagram back in January about my goal for this year of finding balance and clarity, while still trying to expand in the business field. I asked for tips on "doing it all & doing it well" and Stacie commented about how she works hard to find balance daily, especially when she works 60-80 hours a week! I immediately reached out to her about doing a guest post, because I felt that she would have a lot of great advice to offer my reader (and myself)! Thanks so much, Stacie!

My daily routine is definitely far from routine. I try to keep some parts of it routine, but most of the time it is unpredictable, which is part of the reason I love my chosen field of becoming a surgeon. My mornings usually start between 4-5am. My day usually ends around 6pm or so. My workweek averages between 60-80 hours with one day off per week, and I am on call for 24-30 hours at a time one or two weekends a month. One thing that is ALWAYS constant is that I turn on my Keurig and make a cup of coffee as soon as I get up! 

My days vary from things being mundane routine housekeeping tasks, to a trauma alert that needs to be rushed to the operating room, and everything else in between. Patient care is the focus of my day no matter what service I'm working on. Residency is more than just working though; there are case presentations, educational conferences to attend, skills to learn and master, you are continually learning, growing, and studying. Even though I may get home at 6pm, I still have to read and study, cook dinner, and spend time with my husband. I guess by now you get the point that my day can sometimes be pretty unpredictable and my day off is much appreciated! So, how do I keep it all together? In short, it requires commitment, determination, time management, attempts at meal planning (ha) and support from my husband and family. 

When I started residency one of my mentors' advice to me was "make every moment in your life count, you don't have time to have wasted moments". That statement made me really think about how I spend my time, and how I choose to live with intention. Life is short! I try not to waste time on things that don't add value to my life. So when I have my day off and my husband and I just want to have a "lazy day", we take it! 

Motivation -- I believe the things that motivate me through the rough days can be applied to anyone who is working towards a goal. Keeping the short-term goals and the ultimate end-goal in mind on a daily basis is imperative and helps keep me focused when I'm tired. I end every day with thinking "what could I have done better today? What were my deficits today and how can I improve on them?" My professional on-going goals revolve around becoming a better physician inside and outside of the operating room, fostering professional relationships, and just learning as much as I can on a daily basis. In the long-term I'd like to specialize in breast oncology surgery as well as maintain a general surgery practice. 

In any career, you have your down moments. The most important thing to realize is that there will be bad days, but you can't let that discourage you, and instead, use it to motivate you. It's important for me to uphold a positive attitude even though I may not be feeling it at that moment. You never know what someone else is going through so I always treat others with respect even through my personal frustrations or struggles. Your day is what you make of it, and seeing a smile from a stranger can surprisingly life you up! 

In my personal life, I have a few ambitions to help make my life "flow". Prioritizing my limited free time with whom, what, and where it goes is extremely important to me. As far as time management goes at home, outsourcing certain tasks have been a huge help to us! We have someone deep clean our house every other week and we utilize the Kroger Clicklist (where someone doe your grocery shopping for you!!). If you can afford to outsource household tasks (the ones you don't enjoy spending time on anyway), I highly suggest it. It may not be for everyone, but for us, it is worth it and gives us more time to spend with each other doing the things we most enjoy. 

Physical and spiritual wellness is something I strive for that helps me achieve balance in my life as well. Since I am sometimes working during church services, I try to incorporate daily readings into my routine. I have "blessings for the morning/evening" books with short reading that I read to keep me grounded in my faith during the busy times. Staying in touch with my faith keeps life in perspective for me and is a central aspect to our marriage as well. As far as physical well-being goes - I don't have time for an hour at the gym everyday, so I try to do T25 workouts and I follow BodyFit by Amy on Facebook and Youtube, she's great! 

Last, but not least, maintaining personal relationships can be hard when you are always on the go. No matter how busy I am, my marriage is always priority. My husband is my #1 supporter and I wouldn't be successful without him by my side! I don't know what I'd do without talking to my family and best friend regularly as well. So, when you achieve your dreams, don't forget about the ones who supported you along the way!

 

 Aside from Stacie's professional goals, her personals goals include: 

  • Taking an international or "big" vacation every year with her husband (They did Ireland in 2016 an plan to do Puerto Rico this year)
  • Take small day or weekend trips to various places when they have the opportunity
  • Read more non-medical books, learn to garden & paint (or some other non-medical skill)

Five Apps I'm Loving This Year

It's been a long damn day, ya feel me? Currently sipping red wine, waiting on pizza to be delivered and for Ladies of London to come on Bravo tonight. This year one of my goals for this site is to give you more business insight & things that work for me on a daily basis. I'm obsessed with apps that can provide me with A. motivation B. convenience and C. knowledge. Recently I've added 5 new apps to my iPhone so I thought I'd share those with you. 

1. The Secret Daily Teachings App

This App is an extension of the New York Times Best-Selling book by Rhonda Byrne, The Secret. In this book, she explains the Law of Attraction and how you can use it to create your dream life. All around the world, people have been inspired by her teachings to live the life of their dreams with these principles. If you haven't heard of this book, I'd highly suggest you check it out! (Linked below). This App provides you with a daily quote or teaching. I always find these daily reminders thought-provoking and they are a constant reminder that you are what you think. Positive thoughts attract positive, negative thoughts attract negative. Download on the Apple App Store here

2. Shipt

Shipt is a Grocery Delivery service that I recently started using. You order, a reliable shopper grabs the items you've selected & they deliver (same day service)! Orders over $35 have free delivery! I've found it to be super convenient and such a time-saver! In our area the store that is available is Publix, which is perfect because that's where I do the majority of our grocery shopping. My shoppers have been great so far, and they send me text notifications of their progress & if any items I've ordered are out of stock. You can order the groceries on your computer or by using their app (here). Another favorite feature is you are able to tip your shopper through the app, so no worries if you don't have any cash on hand. 

3. Breathe

Stop, Breathe & Think App provides you with "Emotional Wellness Everyday." This app gives you the skills to develop and apply kinds and compassion in your daily life through Stop, Breathe, Think! You Stop what you are doing & check in with the app. You practice mindful breathing, and then you can practice different meditations. Basically this app teaches you how to meditate. I've been enjoying this app. Sometimes during the day I get so caught up in my work & thoughts and become quite tense. This app gives me a few minutes to center my thoughts and de-stress. 4. Udemy

Udemy is the largest online learning marketplace. It provides you with courses in SO MANY different areas and topics that are completely online. I found this website a few weeks ago and I swear I've already purchased 8 courses (they were on a MAJOR sale at the beginning of the year). I am a firm believer that you should never stop learning. They have courses in Business, IT, Lifestyle, Photography, Health & Business, Music, Academics, and many more. For example, I've purchased "How to use GMAIL to Maximize your Productivity," "a Photoshop Course, Illustrator Course, "Advanced Excel Formulas" and a Digital Marketing course. There are over 48,000 courses to choose from! Download the app here. 

5. Oprah & Deepak Chopra Meditation Experience

As you can probably tell, I'm trying to incorporate more meditation practices into my daily life. I find Oprah to be such an inspirational figure so when I saw a course titled "7 Days to Relieve Stress & Anxiety" in my e-mail, I felt it was picked for me. I downloaded the course through the app. Here is a description of the course-

How To Kick Monday's Ass In Five Steps

Happy Monday! All too familiar is the {formerly} dreaded Monday morning. I used to wake up in such a negative space about the new week, and would count down the days & hours until the next weekend. Now when I wake up on a Monday, I see it as a fresh, new opportunity for growth and evolvement. For the past year or so I've been focusing on implementing small steps in my daily routines that are especially helpful for a successful Monday. I'm going to share 5 of them with you below. What kind of things are you doing to stay motivated on a Monday? What are some small steps you can take to make Monday's better? Let me know! Here's to a successful af Monday. 

1. Select a Motto - I like to start my week off with an inspiration quote or idea that I translate into my motto for the week. I write it down on my nice notebook paper and place it in the front of my planner. I find myself going back to it daily to refocus my energy on my goals for the week. This week the motto I chose was from TheChampagneDiet on Snapchat. It's really sentences that Cara told her followers to focus on this week - "Am I listening to my intuition? Am I in flow? An I in my zone of genius?" Cara also mentioned making each day count, instead of living in routines. I LOVED this. Seriously obsessed with Cara and all of her awesome web content and her books. 

2. Pick A Focus Word - Usually I pick a focus word that is related to the motto I've chosen for the week. A focus word can be easier to remember and repeat to yourself throughout the day. This week my focus word is "Thoughts." I'm paying more attention to my thoughts and how I can focus on creating positive thoughts and energy when I'm feeling stressed or negative. 

3. Schedule A Task or Goal - Take some time Monday morning to select a task or goal that you would like to accomplish this week and write it in your planner. This week I want to make sure I workout at least 3 times during the week. I worked out as soon as I got home from the office today. Now I just need to get in a workout 2 more times by Friday to achieve this goal! 

4. Find Inspiration - Buy a beautiful fashion or interior design magazine, buy a new book, listen to a podcast or audiobook. I enjoy perusing Harper's Bazaar, Who What Wear, www.caraalwill.com or listening to podcasts to get motivation. 

5. Buy Some Wine! - If all else fails - get some decent wine from Publix and take a hot, relaxing bath with candles and a chill playlist. Think about what you can do differently tomorrow to wake up in a better state of mind.
