Savannah Influencers Featured In South Magazine

What a proud moment this is to be featured in South Magazine with the other board members of Savannah Influencers.

"One of this year’s most talked about social media buzzwords is “influencer,” meaning one whose social presence generates a following large and consistent enough to pay attention to said influencer. On paper, the term might reflect a tired exercise of selfies and shameless self-promotion, but one group of Savannah women is rapidly changing the name and game of what it means to influence in the digital age for the better."

Appreciating Minimalism in "Blogger" Culture

I don’t know about you, but more and more when I scroll on Instagram I’m feeling like I’m constantly being advertised to. I can’t tell you how many bloggers I’ve unfollowed because I just don’t feel like they are being authentic with their posts anymore. (Note: this post isn’t to bash blogging/Instagram as a business. I think it is a brilliant business venture where a lot of money can be made but this is addressing the parts of it that I don’t like.)

Today, big bloggers means big business. Those who’ve garnered a large following are able to make a considerable amount of money from affiliate links, sponsored blog posts and sponsored Instagram posts. I’ve done a ton of research about affiliate links and sponsored posts with my own website & Instagram. Last year I also attended a Create & Cultivate seminar in NYC that was geared towards social media business.

You see - when bloggers (and myself) post shopping links to their outfit as I’ve done at the end of this post, they can get paid per click or paid with a sale is made. This is called an affiliate link. Because my following isn’t that big yet, I haven’t really made that much money at all from these links. But, if you’ve got 200K followers that are clicking on your shirt link - the money really starts to add up! And bloggers should get paid for this - they are showing you where an outfit came from and providing you with the exact link to make your shopping easier. I think it gets excessive when bloggers link several options though - for example - I may link this jacket I’m wearing and then link 5 other jackets. To me this is time wasted for the viewer but it delivers more clicks. I could link 5 jackets that *look* the same but how do I know what the quality of the jacket is? I haven’t worn those other jackets so I’m not going to be okay linking a jacket that may be shitty quality just to get more clicks.

Look at Instagram posts and you may notice hashtags such as #spon #ad #sponsored #paidpartnership - these are signs that the blogger is being paid to post about the product. I know a lot of bloggers who are ethical who really only do sponsored posts with products they either currently use or have tested for a few weeks before sharing. However, there are a lot of bloggers who do sponsored posts for items that, in my opinion, they don’t use. Even though I don’t have a lot of followers, I have gotten a ton of emails offering me paid posts. Examples include: teeth whitening kits, cheap jewelry & sunglasses, and Jord watches to name a few. I have refused these partnerships because 1. I got my teeth whitening kit from my dentist 2. I don’t wear a lot of jewelry and 3. I have one vintage watch that I love and I wouldn’t necessarily buy a Jord watch because it’s not my style.

Another topic I’d like to discuss is that I’m sure you’ve noticed when bloggers get free stuff. Of course that is a pretty fun perk! Who wouldn’t want to receive free skin care, makeup & clothes? Sounds like a dream to me. BUT - these full-time bloggers are then able to wear 4-5 different outfits during a day, photograph them all and then have so much content to share with you several times a day. They are of course using affiliate links for these free items - affiliate links that they are getting paid when you click on them - and they didn’t even have to pay for the sweater or accessory.

The excessive NEW NEW NEW that we are being force fed is exhausting. Normal people don’t have 2 different outfits for every day of the month. What happened to someone showing you a sweater that they absolutely LOVE and not only that - but actually photographing it and posting it more than once? I don’t know about you - but when I invest $200 in my favorite pair of jeans - you better believe that I’m going to wear them 3-4 times a week and be photographed in them constantly. After all, that’s why you invest in a closet staple, no? I love having my go-to jeans t-shirts. That I can wear over and over again and feel confident and beautiful in.

I wouldn’t say that I am obsessed with following fashion trends, but I do appreciate fashion and I like to have a certain aesthetc when I dress every day. I choose to invest in staple items like jeans, shoes & bags and then buy a few trendy pieces to fill in the gaps. It’s not normal to buy *50 must - have items for Spring* (literally the title of a Shop Style Instagram Story link that truly pissed me off). 50? Fifty? How about FIVE trends you should try for spring? This link is pressuring you to feel like you need 50 items for spring when truly you don’t NEED any of it.

I know this post is getting lengthy but I just had to get a few things off of my chest. I will always be honest and authentic with you guys. I wouldn’t turn down sponsorships or paid posts if it was something that I really like and would purchase anyway. But I also wouldn’t have every post I put on Instagram be sponsored, you feel me?

Please avoid the feeling that you don’t have enough or that you need more. True style isn’t about how many shirts you have - it’s about how you wear the shirts that you do have.

What are your thoughts on all of this? Do you think the sponsored content is getting excessive or have you not even noticed it? I’d love to know!

Xoxo, Meredith

Day at The Museum with a Badass

When my friend Kelsey asked me if I would want to go check out the Guo Pei: Couture Beyond exhibit at SCAD with her - I screamed a bit inside. I’ve lived downtown for over a year but (embarrassingly) haven’t been to any of the SCAD museums yet. The perfect girl’s afternoon was born. Kelsey hosted an event at Thread & Onion, a local boutique and I met her there. I was so impressed with this boutique - I got one top in three different colors and a chic & smart red dress. I will definitely be back there. Everything is designed by SCAD alumni and made in Savannah.

We lunched at Soho (you must get their grilled cheese & tomato soup combo - I always get collard greens on the side). After lunch we went to the Guo Pei exhibit. If you aren’t familiar with Guo Pei - maybe this Rihanna dress from the Met Ball 2015 will catch your attention. There were only a handful of pieces on display in Savannah, however the guides told us that in Atlanta they have around 50 pieces - so definitely check that out if you’re in the A.

After this exhibit, we  went over to the actual SCAD Museum of Art and toured the exhibits there - so fun. I decided to go with a full-on “LOOK” for this outing. I recently got this Zara sweater dress and thought it would be cute paired with Chanel shoes, tights & cap. When it gets a bit warmer I will ditch the tights!

If you aren’t already following Kelsey - you must do so now! She’s got a smart mouth & amazing style. Her blog is called Pardon My French and we met through Instagram (where most of my new friends come from now). This blogger & mom of 4 is currently kicking cancer’s ass. She had a double mastectomy on Friday and I am just so proud to call her my friend. She really is so strong and has the best attitude about everything. So inspirational.

Thanks Kelsey for the fun afternoon and we will do it again soon!!! Outfit details are linked at the end of the post.

A Few Outfit Recaps

Hi guys! When I say that I have been BUSY the past few weeks - I mean it! I have missed 2 Falcons home game if that is any indication. In lieu of 3 separate posts, I opted to combine three recent outfits here and provide you a description & links to items shown.

Also, if you're reading this, I hope you've signed up for my e-mail list! I'm sending a 20% promo code to my online store to all new subscribers. Plus, you'll be the first to know when my holiday gift guide video launches on Thanksgiving. Lastly, be sure to come out & see my new designs that I'll be showcasing at my pop-up shop this Friday at Pace Lighting on Chatham Parkway in Savannah at the "Fashion at Your Pace" that my friend Megan of @BeingMrsFowler is hosting. This should be a really fun event, and I hope to see you there!

xoxo, Meredith

I had a lot of fun playing around with this look. I actually wore this on Halloween! I am very pleased with the purchase of this Mango Blazer, and I know that I will be wearing it so much for months to come. Red is huge right now & I really wanted to play around with red pants- & red shoes. I opted to also throw in the lace hose - as I've seen tons of my favorite street-style stars rocking tights & socks lately.

Guys, I am obsessed with this luxe brown sweater. And it so SO warm. I paired it with these cream Mango jeans (another recent favorite purchase) and my go-to knit boots. This faux fur is so soft and I can't wait to wear it over & over.

Shoes - zara

Shoes - zara

Apparently I have a thing for war & fuzzy. I bought this jacket from Zara a few weeks ago and this was my first time wearing it. Brandon and I were going out for lunch & shopping on Saturday and I wanted to be comfortable but warm. The jacket was a bit much for day time, so I dressed it down with this hoodie from Urban Outfitters Men's section. I ended up loving how this look came together. The Celine sunnies were the perfect touch, in my opinion.

Red Velvet Cake

I've decided to appropriately title this look "Red Velvet Cake" after this gorgeous jacket that I got last year. I went for a sporty chic look with this outfit. I love the way the jacket pops against the black & white striped trousers. Most of the items I'm wearing are either from last year or sold out, so I found several similar items that you can purchase below.

This week I have a ton going on at the office & with Savannah Influencers! SI is planning our very first benefit event to be held in January. It is going to be amazing - I have to keep the details secret for now but definitely stay tuned for when tickets go on sale! I'm also looking forward to a Savannah Blogger meet up this Saturday! I can't wait to meet up with some of my girlfriends (and meet a few new ladies, too).

Hope you all kick ass this week! xoxo, Meredith

Outfit Effort - Minimal... Spanx - Necessary.

Is there an outfit easier to wear that gives this much chic-ness? I don't think so. Sometimes the simplest outfits give the most dramatic effect (and you save time not worrying about pairing things together)! I fell in love with this Alice + Olivia t-shirt dress the minute I saw it. It comes with a belt but I chose to leave it off for this lewk. Oversized sweater dresses and long tunics look amazing paired with over-the-knee boots so this outfit was a breeze to style.

I opted for a low pony to show off the open neckline of this piece. You know I don't wear a ton of jewelry so of course, I kept that to a minimum as well. The best secret for pulling off a look like this is proper undergarments! I LOVE my Spanx and wear them all the time! They smooth everything and in any case, make sure that however the wind blows, my ass cheeks won't show!!! I don't have time to be "adjusting" all day so with these Spanx on I can be confident that I won't flash anyone, haha! I also usually ditch any bra with an underwire in favor of the most comfortable Calvin Klein one. Don't worry, I've linked everything at the end of this post! What are some easy outfits you like to style?

Honorable Mention to my hubby Brandon who is enjoying this whole "photographer" thing - I think he's doing a great job! xoxoxoxo

Will It Ever Be Fall in Georgia?

I type this behind furious fingers. I can't believe it's 80 degrees outside today, October 9th. I REFUSE to wear anything that even remotely resembles "summer." I packed up all of my bikinis and shorts this weekend, IN FACT! I may or may not have sweat during this entire photo session yesterday, but it's ok because I spend the majority of the day inside anyway. This outfit is so simple to throw together - you may even have these staples in your closet already! I opted for a faux leather pair of pants that I've had for a few years worn under this Topshop trench coat. Add your favorite black booties, and you are trés chic! Let's not forget to mention MY FAVORITE NAIL COLOR OF ALL TIME. Seriously, this is THE BEST COLOR YOU WILL EVER OWN. I don't care that it cost $28 - it's worth every single bit. If you've never owned a YSL nail polish - you must try it. The brush is perfection - makes it so easy to paint on. This color is #36 Vert D'orient, & I have repurchased it several times. All of the items in this outfit are old, so I have linked similar new items that you can find in stores now.

What fall trends are you most excited to wear? Are you still wearing summer clothes or are you sweating through your thigh high boots?!? I saw someone yesterday at a coffee shop in a full-on Easter Sunday Lilly Pullizter dress, I kid you not.
